Federal guidance accepts certain rounding practices only when they do not result, over time, in failure to compensate employees properly for time actually worked. This calculator can expose the arithmetic pattern in the intervals you enter, but it cannot establish the long-term effect of a policy from one sample.
Federal wage-and-hour guidance recognizes that time clocks do not always produce payroll records down to the exact minute. Under 29 CFR 785.48(b), practices that record time to the nearest five minutes, one-tenth of an hour, or quarter hour have historically been accepted when the arrangement does not, over time, result in failure to compensate employees properly for all time actually worked.
A rounding method can reduce time on one interval and add time on another. The federal principle is not that every individual punch must favor either side; the long-term practice must not leave employees uncompensated for time actually worked. That is why this tool totals all entered intervals rather than highlighting only one favorable or unfavorable punch.
The calculator focuses on the three common intervals expressly referenced in federal guidance. It does not assume that using one of these intervals automatically makes a particular policy acceptable.

A few minutes of rounding may look immaterial in isolation, but accumulated time can affect the number of hours recorded in a workweek. First determine the time total you are reviewing. Then, if the weekly hours exceed 40 and federal overtime rules apply, use the appropriate regular rate and premium calculation. Combining time rounding, overtime classification, shift differentials, bonuses, and state daily-overtime rules into one automatic result would require assumptions this tool is designed to avoid.
