The calculator rounds each clock-in and clock-out independently to the nearest selected interval using ordinary nearest-interval arithmetic.

What this comparison does

It compares exact elapsed work intervals with the same punches rounded to the selected increment. It does not determine whether every minute between punches was compensable work, whether a rounding policy is lawful, or whether state/local rules permit the practice.

How time-clock rounding works

Federal wage-and-hour guidance recognizes that time clocks do not always produce payroll records down to the exact minute. Under 29 CFR 785.48(b), practices that record time to the nearest five minutes, one-tenth of an hour, or quarter hour have historically been accepted when the arrangement does not, over time, result in failure to compensate employees properly for all time actually worked.

Why the cumulative sample matters

A rounding method can reduce time on one interval and add time on another. The federal principle is not that every individual punch must favor either side; the long-term practice must not leave employees uncompensated for time actually worked. That is why this tool totals all entered intervals rather than highlighting only one favorable or unfavorable punch.

The calculator focuses on the three common intervals expressly referenced in federal guidance. It does not assume that using one of these intervals automatically makes a particular policy acceptable.

Nearest five minutes

With minute-level punches, minutes 0–2 around a five-minute mark round down and minutes 3–4 round up to the next mark.

Nearest tenth hour

One-tenth of an hour equals six minutes. This calculator therefore rounds each punch to the nearest six-minute boundary.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Hours Worked Advisor explains that recording starting and stopping time to the nearest five minutes, one-tenth, or quarter hour can be acceptable when the arrangement averages out so employees are properly compensated for all time actually worked. DOL Fact Sheet #53 also illustrates quarter-hour rounding and warns that always rounding down can violate minimum-wage and overtime requirements.

How to review a rounding pattern responsibly

A one-day example can explain the mechanics, but a longer sample is more useful when you want to understand whether a rounding practice trends upward, downward, or stays close to neutral.

Use the calculator to

  • compare exact and rounded elapsed time interval by interval;
  • see whether the sample has a net upward, downward, or neutral difference;
  • identify which intervals created the largest differences;
  • estimate a simple pay difference using one entered hourly rate;
  • print the arithmetic for payroll review or recordkeeping.

Do not use the result to assume

  • that every minute between two punches was compensable work;
  • that one unfavorable sample proves a legal violation;
  • that one favorable sample proves a policy is compliant;
  • that federal guidance overrides a stricter state or local rule;
  • that the optional hourly-rate estimate accounts for overtime or premium pay.

Why small time differences can matter near 40 hours

A few minutes of rounding may look immaterial in isolation, but accumulated time can affect the number of hours recorded in a workweek. When a worker is close to an overtime threshold, the time total and the applicable regular-rate calculation should be reviewed separately. Keep the calculations separate

First determine the time total you are reviewing. Then, if the weekly hours exceed 40 and federal overtime rules apply, use the appropriate regular rate and premium calculation. Combining time rounding, overtime classification, shift differentials, bonuses, and state daily-overtime rules into one automatic result would require assumptions this tool is designed to avoid.

What is the “7-minute rule” for quarter-hour rounding?

It is a common shorthand for nearest-quarter-hour rounding at minute precision: punches 1–7 minutes after a quarter-hour boundary round back, while punches 8–14 minutes after the boundary round forward. The phrase is not a substitute for reviewing the full federal rule or any applicable state law.

Why is one-tenth of an hour six minutes?

An hour contains 60 minutes, so one-tenth of an hour is 6 minutes. The calculator rounds each punch to the nearest six-minute boundary when that option is selected.

Does the calculator round total daily hours or each punch?

Each clock-in and clock-out is rounded independently, then the rounded elapsed interval is calculated. That makes the individual effects visible instead of simply rounding an already-totaled number of hours.

How should I enter an unpaid lunch break?

If lunch has separate clock-out and clock-in punches, enter the pre-lunch work period and post-lunch work period as two separate intervals. That lets all four punches participate in the comparison rather than subtracting an assumed break amount.

Can I enter an overnight shift?

Yes. When clock-out is earlier than or equal to clock-in, the calculator treats clock-out as the following day. Each interval is limited to 24 hours.

Does a negative net difference mean the employer violated the FLSA?

No. It means the entered sample contains less rounded time than exact punch time. Federal guidance focuses on whether a rounding practice results over time in employees not being properly compensated for all time actually worked. Other facts and laws can also matter.

Does the pay-impact estimate calculate overtime?

No. It multiplies the sample's net minute difference by one hourly rate that you enter. It is a simple arithmetic illustration and intentionally excludes overtime premiums, shift differentials, bonuses, minimum-wage analysis, and other pay rules.

Are my punches stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Clock-in times, clock-out times, hourly rates, and calculated differences are not sent to a PayStubCheck calculation endpoint or stored in browser storage.
