State rates are estimated effective middle-bracket rates based on 2026 tax tables. Consult a tax professional for exact figures.

State income tax isn't
one-size-fits-all.

Each state has its own withholding tables, filing thresholds, and local tax rules. Our engine uses official-source data for all 50 states — not flat estimates. Select your state to see what applies to you.

Official withholding tables

California uses Method B, New York uses NYS-50-T-NYS, Ohio uses municipal rates — we implement each state's actual methodology, not a generic estimate.

9 no-income-tax states

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have no state income tax. Our engine automatically applies $0 withholding for these states.

Local taxes where applicable

New York City and Yonkers residents face additional local income tax on top of state withholding. Ohio workers may owe municipal income tax. We account for these where data is available.

2026 rates, always current

State tax rates, brackets, and withholding formulas update annually. Our engine reflects 2026 official tables. Estimates are for recordkeeping — consult a tax professional for exact filing requirements.

Your employer doesn't
withhold for you.

As a 1099 contractor, platform worker, or self-employed professional, no one withholds state or federal income tax from your earnings. Documenting your income — with accurate withholding estimates — helps you stay organized, estimate quarterly taxes, and satisfy income verification requests.

Rental Applications

Landlords and property managers typically require proof of income equaling 2–3× monthly rent. A professionally formatted earnings statement — with state-accurate withholding — presents your income in a format they recognize and trust.

Loan & Mortgage Pre-Approval

Lenders want to see consistent income history. A detailed earnings statement with gross pay, deductions, and net pay — formatted like payroll — gives underwriters the structure they need to assess your application.

Quarterly Tax Estimation

Self-employed workers must pay estimated taxes quarterly. Running your earnings through our state-aware engine gives you a clear picture of your federal + state withholding obligations before deadlines arrive.

Personal Recordkeeping

Track your income period-by-period with professional-format records. YTD totals, deduction history, and net pay calculations — the same level of documentation a W-2 employee receives automatically, built for you.

How our 50-state
tax engine works.

Most paystub generators apply a flat percentage. We don't. Here's what actually happens when you select your state.

Step 1 — Gross pay

We calculate your gross pay from your inputs: regular hours × rate, plus overtime (at your chosen multiplier), holiday pay, bonus, and commission.

Step 2 — Pre-tax deductions

401(k), health insurance, FSA, and commuter benefits reduce your taxable income before withholding is calculated — just like your employer's payroll system does.

Step 3 — Federal withholding

2026 IRS Publication 15-T tables for all filing statuses (Single, MFJ, MFS, HoH). Annualized income method with W-4 adjustments including Step 2 checkbox, Step 3 credits, and additional withholding.

Step 4 — State withholding

Each state's official methodology is applied: graduated brackets, flat rates, annualized wage method, or zero for no-tax states. Your state choice drives this calculation completely.

Step 5 — FICA

Social Security (6.2%) up to the 2025 wage base of $176,100, plus Medicare (1.45%) with the additional 0.9% surtax applied above $200k. Correct YTD tracking across all pay periods.

Step 6 — Net pay & YTD

Net pay = gross − all taxes − post-tax deductions. YTD totals are projected from your current pay period number, showing cumulative gross, taxes, and deductions for the year to date.

Tax calculations are estimates for document formatting and recordkeeping purposes only. Consult a licensed tax professional for filing guidance.

State tax questions? Check.

How does the engine know my state tax rate?
You select your state in Step 3 (Worker Information) of the generator. Our engine applies state-aware estimate logic based on the state you select, including zero state income tax for no-tax states and state-level estimate fields where applicable. These estimates are for document formatting and recordkeeping, not tax filing advice.
My state has no income tax — what shows on my document?
For the 9 no-income-tax states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming), the State Income Tax line shows $0.00 on both the current period and YTD columns. Federal withholding and FICA still apply normally.
Are these calculations exact or estimates?
They are estimates for document formatting and personal recordkeeping. Individual situations, multiple jobs, deductions, credits, and local rules can affect your actual tax liability. Consult a tax professional for exact filing obligations.
Can I use this for states I don't live in?
Yes — you can generate a document for any state. Some gig workers and remote contractors earn income in states where they don't reside. You can enter any state for withholding purposes. Note that multi-state tax situations can be complex — consult a tax professional if you earn income across multiple states.
What about city or local income taxes?
NYC and Yonkers local income taxes are included for New York state filers. Ohio's municipal tax system varies by city; we apply state-level withholding only and note this on the document. Pennsylvania local taxes (EIT) are not currently included. Check your state page for details on what's covered.
Is this the same document regardless of state?
The document format is consistent, while the state selection can affect state-related estimate fields and how the employee information appears. Your state selection also appears on the document in the employee information section.
