This tool is intentionally narrow: it models a positive hourly-rate correction where payroll was otherwise calculated using one hourly rate. Add each affected workweek separately so federal overtime hours are not averaged across weeks.

What this model assumes

The original payroll already included straight-time pay for every hour and, when applicable, the basic federal overtime premium using the original hourly rate. The only change being modeled is a higher hourly rate. If the period also includes multiple rates, bonuses, commissions, shift premiums, or other regular-rate compensation, use the related tools below rather than treating this result as a complete payroll recomputation.

Why not just multiply the raise by total hours?

That captures the straight-time difference, but it can understate a simple federal overtime correction when the employee worked more than 40 hours in an affected workweek. The workweek-specific half-time adjustment accounts for the increase in the regular rate on those overtime hours.

Retro pay generally refers to compensation connected to an earlier period that is paid later. One common scenario is a raise, collective-bargaining increase, or payroll rate correction that becomes effective before payroll begins using the new hourly rate.

Worked example

Example: $2 hourly correction across a 45-hour workweek

Suppose payroll originally used $20 per hour, but the corrected rate is $22 per hour for a workweek in which the employee worked 45 hours. The hourly difference is $2.

$2 × 45 hours = $90. This applies the rate difference to every hour in the affected workweek, including the straight-time component already present in overtime hours.

There are 5 federal overtime hours. The additional half-time amount is 0.5 × $2 × 5 = $5.

Federal methodology and official sources

29 CFR § 778.303 addresses retroactive pay increases and explains that a retroactive increase raises the regular rate for the period of retroactivity. The U.S. Department of Labor's Field Operations Handbook likewise states that retroactive increases given as compensation for services must be included in the regular rate and allocated to the prior workweeks to which the compensation relates. DOL Fact Sheet #23 explains the basic federal rule that covered nonexempt employees generally receive overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek and that hours are not averaged across multiple workweeks.

What is retro pay?

Is retro pay the same as back pay?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday payroll discussions, but they can have different legal or administrative meanings depending on the context. This calculator does not make that legal distinction; it models a specific hourly-rate correction for previously worked hours.

How do I calculate retro pay for an hourly raise?

Subtract the original hourly rate from the corrected rate. Multiply that difference by the affected hours. If an affected workweek contains federal overtime hours, add the overtime adjustment attributable to the higher rate for those hours.

Why must I enter each workweek separately?

The basic federal overtime framework evaluates hours by workweek. A 50-hour week followed by a 30-hour week is not treated as two 40-hour weeks for the purpose of deciding whether the first week contained federal overtime.

How does a retroactive hourly increase affect overtime?

Federal guidance explains that a retroactive pay increase operates to increase the regular rate for the retroactive period. In the simple single-rate model on this page, the rate difference applies to all hours and an additional one-half of the rate difference is added for hours over 40 in each affected workweek.

Can I use this calculator for bonuses or commissions?

Does this calculate state overtime or wage penalties?

No. It does not calculate state daily overtime, double time, local rules, wage-payment penalties, liquidated damages, interest, minimum-wage corrections, or other remedies. The overtime portion is limited to the basic federal hours-over-40 workweek model.

Does the result prove payroll compliance?

No. It is an arithmetic scenario based on the values entered. It does not determine coverage, exemption status, proper rate classification, legal payment timing, contract obligations, or compliance with federal, state, or local law.

Are my rates and hours stored?
