That captures the straight-time difference, but it can understate a simple federal overtime correction when the employee worked more than 40 hours in an affected workweek. The workweek-specific half-time adjustment accounts for the increase in the regular rate on those overtime hours.

This focused tool works best when the underlying facts are simple and the main question is the mathematical effect of a higher hourly rate applied retroactively.
A simple rate-difference model is not enough when the employee's regular rate depends on additional compensation or multiple rates.
Suppose payroll originally used $20 per hour, but the corrected rate is $22 per hour for a workweek in which the employee worked 45 hours. The hourly difference is $2.
$2 × 45 hours = $90. This applies the rate difference to every hour in the affected workweek, including the straight-time component already present in overtime hours.
There are 5 federal overtime hours. The additional half-time amount is 0.5 × $2 × 5 = $5.
$90 + $5 = $95. Equivalently, each of the 5 overtime hours receives $3 of additional pay—the $2 rate difference plus another $1 half-time adjustment.
29 CFR § 778.303 addresses retroactive pay increases and explains that a retroactive increase raises the regular rate for the period of retroactivity. The U.S. Department of Labor's Field Operations Handbook likewise states that retroactive increases given as compensation for services must be included in the regular rate and allocated to the prior workweeks to which the compensation relates. DOL Fact Sheet #23 explains the basic federal rule that covered nonexempt employees generally receive overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek and that hours are not averaged across multiple workweeks.

The basic federal overtime framework evaluates hours by workweek. A 50-hour week followed by a 30-hour week is not treated as two 40-hour weeks for the purpose of deciding whether the first week contained federal overtime.
